Day 10 of yoga

So this Asian lady comes into class. She stood out. Even with my limited experience I could tell she knew nothing of yoga. Especially hot yoga. She shows up in a sweat shirt and jeans with no water bottle. Not to insult your intelligence but she didn't make it through the class. I'm just thinking that if it was me, I would probably have died... slowly and painfully.
Now that I'm a third of the way through, I'm trying to see if I can notice any tangible differences in my appearance. Not that it's the reason I got into this, but as long as the incentive is there, I am at least a little curious. I never took a before photo so I'll just have to use my imagination. As far as how I feel physically; well I still have a alot of gut to trim away. In that respect I notice nothing at all. I doubt my flexibility hasn't seemed to improve much either. I guess 10 days is still a bit early.
I was slightly shocked today. I was looking up hot yoga references to study a bit on.

I used the calories burned calculator and to my amazement, I'm potentially burning more than 1800 calories per session!!! I'm no expert but I'm doubtful. I'm going to try one of those calorie counters and see for myself. Although if it is true, it'd be a fair exchange. 90 minutes of hell for that much seems just.

Day 9 of yoga

If you've done Bikram yoga, you'll have noticed a few common trends. First is the words "lock out the knees". And depending on the position, "go, go more, keep going, go all the way". These coupled with enduring the intense heat make up, not only the physical aspect of Bikram yoga but also part of the spiritual, as well. The idea of enduring the physical pain as your body repairs itself of the stress we put on it in our day to day activity, gives you one of those opportunities to test yourself and your will to push yourself. When you look at yourself in the mirror as you tense up to do a pose with your breath shortening with each exhale, thinking to yourself, that yo can't possibly go another second, several seconds pass and the instructor tells you to change position. Not the most gratifying feeling. However to look back a week or a month to the day you started and think about that.
Today was a good day. I'm noticing a big difference in the amount of water I'm drinking. While water is vital to not dying, during a 90 minute session of yoga the desire to drink isn't so much the thirst as it is the brains way to cope with the frustration of the heat. They say that if you drink enough before the class that you shouldn't need to drink during the class. Although I think there's a point of diminishing returns. I had to leave the room for a few seconds. I was bursting for the biggest pee ever. Still looking for that balance.

Day 8 of yoga

22 days to go. I have Bikrams personal guarantee that in that time I'll have a new body. For those of you who aren't initiated, Bikram Yoga (or hot yoga as some people call it) is a system of yoga that involves 26 poses. The things that really sets it apart from other yogas is the temperature of the room that it's performed in. From start to finish the temperature is a constant 105 and a humidity of 50% (thus, hot yoga). The idea behind the heat is that it increases flexability by warming up the joints, increases the heart rate to boost calorie burning and increases sweating to encourage the toxins in the body to be purged. The following is a diagram of the poses involved in Bikram yoga.
Give it a shot. If you feel it's right for you, take the Bikram, 30 day challenge. One session of yoga a day for 30 days straight.

Day 6 of yoga

So I got home from yesterdays session feeling like I went to hell and back. So for today I figured for the hell of it, lets see if the problem was not enough water. I drank like a fish today. And voila! I felt fine. In fact I'd say today was my best. So I was talking to the instructor. I told him that for some positions I felt nauseated. They all stress that as you progress, it's one of the feelings that you want to encourage. Don't go over board but just to the limit. As well as tell you that you're pushing yourself, it really forces you to kick your concentration into high gear which makes alot of sense. I also bought my mat today. $35. So I don't have to pay to rent one now. But it was kind of nice to not have to wash and dry it myself. Anyways today i also singed up for the month, just to give myself some more incentive to go through with the 30 day challenge. I'm just wondering why they call it challenge. 30 days doesn't seem that long and enduring one class isn't that bad. I'm sure I'll be crying half way through the 30 days.
